Throughout the week, Latino Decisions along with Latino Victory Project and Fusion are releasing daily poll results assessing the reaction of Latino voters to the Republican National Convention. Each day’s online poll consists of Spanish and English surveys of 300 registered Latino voters and have a margin of error of 5.6 percentage points. The convention’s anti-immigrant emphasis repels Latino voters.
- 87% were offended by a pro-deportation video shown on Day 1 of the convention featuring a speaker who stated, “some people call them illegal immigrants – but I call them illegal aliens, criminal illegal aliens who kill people.”
The rhetoric of the most anti-immigrant and anti-Latino Republicans is defining the GOP.
- 68% responded that Iowa Republican Steve King’s questioning the contributions that other subgroups besides white people have made to civilization is similar to what they often hear from Republicans
Negative perceptions of the Republican Party dominate.
- 75% see the GOP as angry
- 78% view the party as anti-immigrant
- Just 20% think the party respects Latinos
Day 2 and Latino voters still don’t love Donald Trump.
- 88% do not love Trump (despite his taco bowls and claims that “Latinos love Trump”)
- 75% think that Trump has made the Republican Party more hostile to Latino voters
- 81% have an unfavorable or very unfavorable view of Trump
