Slides from recent webinar hosted by Matt Barreto from Latino Decisions and Frank Sharry of America’s Voice

Matt Barreto of Latino Decisions and Frank Sharry of America’s Voice recently hosted a webinar where they discussed the full results from their post-SB1070 decision National Survey of Latino registered voters, commissioned by the Center for American Progress Action Fund and America’s Voice. The webinar focused on the impact of the Latino electorate on the 2012 presidential election, as well as Latino attitudes of the Supreme Court SB1070 decisions and concerns regarding racial profiling in the future. Below you can view the slides from their presentation.

New survey questions featured in webinar trends include:

Knowledge of the presidential candidates position on SB1070, and trust on handling immigration reform

  • “If you know, what position did [President Barack Obama/Mitt Romney] take on Arizona’s immigration enforcement law SB1070? Did he favor it, did he oppose it, or have you not heard what he has to say?”
  • “Thinking about a long term solution to the immigration issues in America, which candidate do you think will do a better job handling immigration reform Barack Obama or Mitt Romney?”

Evaluation of Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s statements on Arizona

  • “Recently Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said that states like Arizona should have a right to pass their own immigration laws. Romney has said – “I believe that each state has the duty and the right to secure our borders and preserve the rule of law. I wish the court had given the states more authority to enforce immigration laws“.  He has called immigration laws in Arizona a model for the nation and said undocumented immigrants should self-deport back to their home countries. Does this statement make you more enthusiastic or less enthusiastic about the Mitt Romney, or does it have no effect?”

Evaluations of the two parties in Congress position on immigration reform

  • “From what you have heard or seen in the news, do you think [Democrats/Republicans] in the U.S. Congress are: Ignoring or avoiding the issue of comprehensive immigration reform / Working to pass comprehensive immigration reform / Opposing or blocking comprehensive immigration reform?”
  • “As far as you know, which political party do you think is more responsible for immigration law SB1070 being passed in the first place in Arizona? The Democrats, The Republicans or both political parties equally?”

Trust in the different branches/parties in government to work on behalf of the Latino community

  •  “The U.S. Federal government is comprised of three branches that all have some power over the laws and policies in our country. Thinking about [Democrats in Congress/Republicans in Congress/President Obama/The Supreme Court]. How much do you trust [ INSERT BRANCH] to do what is right for Latinos? Do you trust them very much, somewhat, only a little, or not at all?”
